Wood or Tile Floors for Kitchen Renovation
As a homeowner, there are always things that could be repaired or renovated. That is particularly true when it comes to the kitchen. Some questions, like “should I get wood or tile floors in the kitchen?” come up in nearly every conversation between a homeowner and their designer. Thankfully, there are no wrong answers to questions like that, but there is still advice that can provide clarity.
The Burning Question of Kitchen Renovation
Wood Flooring or Tile Flooring? There are certain advantages to both wood and tile flooring. That’s why it’s important to discuss the pro’s and con’s of each.
Benefits of Wood Flooring
Wood floors are going to be easier to sweep and clean up. Since they have a flat surface, it can be much easier to sweep dust up off them. They are also cheaper than tile floors, especially since the labor costs are so much less.
Disadvantages of Wood Flooring
Wood floors do scratch, unlike tile. They will also need to be refinished. Another con of hardwood floors is that they aren’t waterproof. If water were to sit on top of wood floors they could be damaged.
Benefits of Tile Flooring
There are a couple strictly utilitarian benefits to tile floors. They insulate heat better, if you are using radiant heat. They are also durable and resistant to scratches, and are practically waterproof, which is helpful especially in a kitchen where water or liquid can spill frequently. For more commercial or industrial kitchens, tile is many times preferable.
Disadvantages of Tile Flooring
Tile can crack. The grout gets stained. Tile isn’t perfect either, though it is the preferred choice for some. Another disadvantage of tile floors in the kitchen is that they are harder on feet because of their coarseness. Also, although they are good insulators, they are typically colder, and cold tile can be uncomfortable to walk on, as well.
It’s easy to see that there are a lot of benefits to both wood and tile flooring. The kitchen is one of the most important rooms of the home, so put careful thought into what kind of floors are desired for the kitchen. Wood and tile are both great choices, so there’s no pressure in making a wrong decision.
